Usage limits

AI usage limits compared: windows, weekly caps, and what vendors will not tell you

Most AI vendors no longer publish message counts. They publish windows (5 hours, weekly) and multipliers (2x, 5x, 20x). This page lines up only what each vendor documents, and says plainly where a vendor publishes no number at all.

Quick answer

As of October 23, 2026: Claude and the Gemini app both run on a 5-hour window plus a weekly cap. ChatGPT Plus has 5-hour windows in Codex and ChatGPT Work with published message ranges, while ChatGPT Pro has no 5-hour limit there but a weekly allowance for GPT-6 Pro. Cursor (now sold through X Subscription) refreshes weekly from one pool shared with Grok. GitHub Copilot uses monthly AI Credits. Perplexity publishes exact numbers only for its Enterprise plans.

Reset windows by vendor and plan

Each row quotes the vendor’s own help or pricing page. "No number" means the vendor describes the limit but does not publish a count.

What the multipliers actually multiply

A multiplier is only useful if you know its baseline. Vendors chain them differently, so a "5x" on one plan is not a "5x" on another.

LadderBaselineSteps as documented
ClaudeClaude FreePro is at least 5x Free per session. Max 5x and Max 20x are multiples of Pro. Team Standard is 1.25x Pro, Team Premium 6.25x Pro.

X Subscription (Grok and Cursor)As listed by xAIPremium 4x, Super 15x, Ultra 50x. One pool covers Grok and Cursor.
ChatGPT Pro tiersNot published as a multiplierThree tiers at $100, $200 and $500. Ultrafast speed (Pro $500 only) consumes 8x the included allowance; Fast consumes 2.5x.

Where vendors publish no numbers

If a site gives you an exact message count for any of these, it is an estimate, not a vendor fact.

  • ChatGPT Plus Thinking limits in Chat, and the allowances behind Pro $100, $200 and $500. OpenAI publishes relative tiers only.
  • Claude 5-hour and weekly counts. Anthropic says there is no fixed message count and that it may add weekly or monthly caps.
  • Gemini daily prompt caps. Google describes compute-based limits, not prompt counts.
  • Perplexity Pro and Max Pro Search and Research limits ("weekly" and "monthly" limits, no numbers).
  • Microsoft Copilot limits on the free tier and on Microsoft 365 plans.

Coding agents share the same pool

Claude Code uses the same 5-hour and weekly limits as Claude chat: one shared pool, not a separate allowance. Anthropic gives Pro a wrap-up allowance once per weekly period and Max one at each 5-hour limit inside the weekly limit, and usage credits can continue work past a limit. The monthly API credits that come with Max ($100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, added October 7, 2026) are for the Claude Platform and cannot be spent in Claude Code or the Claude apps.

OpenAI Codex is included on every ChatGPT plan, Free and Go included. On Plus and Business Standard it draws on the same 5-hour ranges listed above. Faster modes cost more allowance: Fast uses 2.5x of the included allowance, and Ultrafast (Pro $500 only) uses 8x.

Cursor no longer has its own subscription ladder. Since October 12, 2026 it is sold through X Subscription, and its weekly pool is shared with Grok. Third-party models in Cursor are billed at API list price.

Verdict: which limit structure fits you

Choose Claude Max 5x if

you hit the Claude 5-hour window several times a week in chat or Claude Code, and the work is worth $100 a month. Max multiplies the per-session allowance; it does not remove the weekly cap.

Choose ChatGPT Pro if

the 5-hour windows in Codex or ChatGPT Work are your bottleneck. Pro has no five-hour limit there, but GPT-6 Pro still has a weekly allowance.

Choose Google AI Pro or Ultra if

you live in Gemini and want limits that scale with storage and Google app value. Ultra is 5x or 20x AI Pro.

Choose GitHub Copilot if

you want a monthly budget you can read in dollars. AI Credits make the cost visible instead of hiding it behind a window.

Stay on your current plan if

you hit a limit less than once a week. Shorter chats, smaller context and lighter models usually fix that for free.

Use the API if

you need predictable, metered capacity. API pricing is per token and has no 5-hour window; see the best AI model page for current rates.

How to stretch any window before you upgrade

  1. Check the vendor usage page first and note which limit you hit: the session window, the weekly cap, or a model-specific cap such as Fable or GPT-6 Pro.
  2. Start a fresh chat per task. Vendors that meter compute count long threads and big files against you, so long chats can drain a window faster.
  3. Route routine work to a lighter model wherever your plan lets you pick one, and keep the top model for the work that needs it.
  4. Schedule heavy agent runs at the start of a window, not at the end of one.
  5. Track two weeks of limit hits before buying the next tier. If you hit the cap less than weekly, the upgrade is a convenience, not a fix.

FAQ

Does Claude reset every 5 hours?

Yes, per Anthropic: Free resets on a rolling 5-hour window, and Pro and Max sessions reset every 5 hours. Paid plans also have a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed time per account.

Is ChatGPT Plus unlimited?

No. OpenAI describes unlimited everyday text chats on Free and Go, subject to abuse safeguards, but Codex and ChatGPT Work on Plus use 5-hour windows with published ranges, and weekly limits may also apply.

Do Claude Code and Claude chat share limits?

Yes. Anthropic documents one shared pool across Claude and Claude Code for the 5-hour and weekly limits.

What happens when I hit the Gemini limit?

Google says limits refresh every 5 hours until the weekly limit is reached. You can extend with AI credits, or the app falls back to a Flash-Lite model.

Why do vendors not publish message counts?

Because limits are compute-based: a long prompt with files costs more than a short one. Vendors publish windows and multipliers instead, and keep the right to adjust them.
